Three Elements of Tentering and Setting

Definition of Setting

Setting is the main process in finishing. By the mechanical action of the setting machine and the shrink-proof, soft and stiff effect of chemical auxiliaries, knitted fabrics can achieve a certain shrinkage, density and handle, and can have the appearance with neat and uniform width, smooth lines and clear texture.

Purposes of Setting

1.Eliminate the internal stress generated by the fiber during stretching, relax macromolecules to a certain extent and improve the shape stability of the fiber (dimensional stability).
2.Further improve the physical-mechanical properties of fiber, such as to improve the fiber crystallinity, elasticity, knot strength, abrasion resistance and fixed crimp (for short-staple) or fixed twist (for filament).
3.Improve the dyeing performance of fiber.
4.Remove the moisture introduced by the fiber during the stretching and oiling process to make the fiber meet the moisture requirements required for the finished product and avoid fiber yellowing due to the un-drying of spinning oil and long-time storage of fiber.

Tentering and Setting

Three Elements of Tentering and Setting

1.Temperature:

Temperature is the most important factor affecting the quality of heat setting. By heat setting, how the creases are removed, the improvement of surface flatness, dimensional thermal stability and other wear properties of fabrics are closely related to the heat setting temperature.

2.Time:

The time of setting is another main process condition for heat setting. After the fabric enters the heating area, the time required for heating setting can be divided into the following parts:

(1)   Time of heating: After the fabric enters the heating area, the time required to heat the fabric surface to the setting temperature.

(2)   Time of heat penetration: After the fabric surface reaches the setting temperature, the time that the fibers inside and outside the fabric become the same setting temperature.

(3)   Time for molecular to adjust: After the fabric reaches the setting temperature, the time that the molecular inside the fiber needs to adjust according to setting condition.

(4)   Cooling time: The time it takes for the fabric to cooling down for fixing the size after it is taken out of the dryer.

3.Tension:

The tension on the fabric during the heat setting process has certain influence on the quality of the setting, including the dimensional thermal stability, strength and elongation at break of fabric.
