The Influence of Moisture Regain on the Comfort of Clothes

The moisture regain of fabrics directly determines the wearing comfort of the clothing. The core influences are mainly on three factors: moisture absorption and breathability, body sensible temperature and fabric handle.

Fabric

Moisture absorption and breathability

Moderate moisture regain (such as cotton and wool): Fabric can quickly absorb the sweat from the skin surface to avoid sticky feeling on skin due to sweat residue.

Too low moisture regain (such as polyester): Fabric has poor moisture absorption, so that sweat easily stays on skin surface. It is hot and not breathable.

Too high moisture regain (such as wool fabric in humid environment): After absorbing too much moisture, fabric becomes heavy and sticky, and the breathability decreases. And there may be unpleasant smell.

Body Sensible Temperature

High temperature environment: After fabric with moderate moisture regain absorbs moisture, when sweat evaporates, it will take away the heat and bring cold sense.

Low temperature environment: The suitable moisture regain of natural fibers can lock the air and form the warmth keeping layer to reduce heat loss. They are warmer than dry synthetic fibers.

Extreme case: At low temperature, fabric with too high moisture regain will make people feel cold for water freezes or heat conducts more quickly.

Handle of Fabric

Moderate moisture regain: Fabric is soft and smooth, and fits skin closely without stiffness. There is no friction or discomfort on the fabric during the movement.

Too low moisture regain: Fabric is too dry and too hard with large friction coefficient. It is easy to produce static electricity to absorb the skin, especially obvious in winter.

Too high moisture regain: Fabric is humid and sticky. When contacting with skin, it is easy to stick to skin and cause constraint sense. Also it may cause skin discomfort.
