The Commonly Used Six Enzymes in Printing and Dyeing Industry

So far, in the textile printing and dyeing, cellulase, amylase, pectinase, lipase, peroxidase and laccase/ glucose oxidase are the six major enzymes frequently used.

1.Cellulase

Cellulase (β-1, 4-glucan-4-glucan hydrolase) is a group of enzymes that degrade cellulose to produce glucose. It is not a single enzyme, but a synergistic multi-component enzyme system, which is a complex enzyme. It is mainly composed of excised β-glucanase, endoexcised β-glucanase and β -glucosidase, as well as xylanase with high activity. It acts on cellulose. And it is the product that is derived from cellulose.

It is also called polishing enzyme, clipping agent and fabric flocks removing agent, etc.

2.Pectinase

Pectinase is a complex enzyme, which refers to various enzymes that decompose pectin. It mainly consists of pectin lyase, pectinesterase, polygalacturonase and pectinate lyase. It is mainly applied in pretreatment scouring process for cotton and flax fibers. It can be compounded with other kinds of enzymes, which is called scouring enzyme.

PS: It is the real scouring enzyme!

3.Lipase

Lipase can hydrolyze fats into glycerol and fatty acids. And fatty acids can be further oxidized to sugars.

In textile industry, lipase is mainly applied for degreasing textile materials and improving properties. It is mainly used to treat wool fibers to remove some lipid in wools, which makes wool fibers have physical and chemical changes and improves the quality of wool.

PS: Protease can be also applied in wool. It is mainly used for shrink resistant finishing for wool fabrics.

4.Catalase

Catalase is an enzyme that catalyzes the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. It is found in the peroxide bodies of cells. Catalase is the symbolic enzyme of peroxidase, which is about 40% of the total peroxisome enzyme. Catalase is found in every tissue of all known animals. It is especially in the liver at high concentrations.

In printing and dyeing industry, catalase is commonly known as deoxidizing enzyme. At present, there are two main kinds in use, as animal liver catalase and plant catalase. The latter has better performance.

5.Amylase

Amylase is a general term for enzymes that hydrolyze starch and glycogen. Generally, the starch slurry on the fabric is hydrolyzed by amylase. Because of the high efficiency and specifity of amylase, enzyme desizing rate is high and desizing speed is fast. Also it has less pollution. The treated fabrics are softer  than those treated by acid process and alkali process. Also it will not damage the fiber.

Amylase is commonly known as desizing enzyme in the printing and dyeing industry. According to different using temperature, it can be divided into normal temperature desizing enzyme, medium temperature desizing enzyme, high temperature desizing enzyme and wide temperature desizing enzyme, etc.

Laccase is a kind of oxidation-reduction enzyme, which is the genetically modified aspergillus niger laccase. It can be applied in the worn-finishing process for jeans wear. The treated fabrics have thick hand feeling with smooth surface and bright and elegant luster. Glucose oxidase is mainly applied in the bleaching process for fabrics. The treated fabrics have soft and plump hand feeling.

PS: The compound of laccase and glucose oxidase can be used as bleaching enzyme in pretreatment process. But because of the cost, it has no large promotion.
