The Astonishing “Textile Talent” of Banana

Banana fiber is one of the strongest fibers in the world. This kind of biodegradable natural fiber is very durable.

Banana fiber is made from banana stems and is mainly composed of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. After chemical degumming, banana fiber can be used in cotton spinning. After treated by combined treatment with biological enzymes and chemical oxidation, drying, scouring and defibrination, banana fiber has light weight, good luster, high moisture absorption and strong antibacterial property. And it is easily degradable and environmentally-friendly.

Banana fiber

Banana fibers can be made into different fabrics and textiles based on the different weights and thicknesses of different parts of different banana stems. The strong and thick fibers are extracted from the outer sheath and soft fibers are mainly extracted from inner sheath.

For example, to convert the fibers of abaca (a kind of banana tree) into materials for papermaking and weaving, the process includes: picking, extracting stems, extracting fibers, making paper, spinning, and weaving.

Banana fiber provides an environmentally-friendly and biodegradable alternative to synthetic textile fibers. It can be made into a kind of multi-functional, durable and light fabric.
