Chemical Composition
Kapok fiber contains about 64% cellulose, 13% xylogen, 8.6% water, 1.4~3.5% ash, 4.7~9.7% water-soluble substances, 2.3~2.5% xylan and 0.8% wax. The degree of polymerization of kapok fiber is about 10,000, which is comparable to that of cotton fiber.
Chemical Property
Kapok fiber can be directly dyed by dyes. However, for kapok fiber contains a large amount of xylogen and hemicellulose, it can be entangled with cellulose and also there are intermolecular forces acting, so that some hydroxyl groups in cellulose are blocked. Thus dye molecules cannot get into the fibers smoothly, resulting in a dye uptake of only 63%, while the dye uptake of cotton under the same conditions is 88%.
Kapok fiber has good chemical property. It has good acid resistance. At room temperature, dilute acids and weak acids such as acetic acid do not influence it. And it has good alkali resistance. At room temperature, NaOH does not influence it.
Application
Medium and high-end clothing, home textile fabric:
Kapok fiber and cotton can be blended into yarns to be widely applied in fields of knitted underwear, fleece jackets, woolen sweaters, woven casual outerwear, beddings and socks, etc.
Fillers for medium and high-end bedding wadding, pillow cores, cushions, etc.:
Fillers made of kapok fibers have good softness, moisture absorption and breathability. And they are green and environmentally-friendly.
Tourist novelty travel products and entertainment products:
Kapok fiber is the best buoyancy material. The bedding made of it is very light and easy to carry.
Materials for heat insulation and sound absorption:
Kapok fiber has a unique structure of thin walls and large hollow space. The void ratio is much higher than that of other fibers. It is an excellent material for heat insulation and acoustic insulating.
