Bio-based materials refer to a new type of materials manufactured by biological, chemical and physical methods using renewable biomass or/and raw materials obtained through bio-manufacturing.
In textile printing and dyeing industry, green development has become an inevitable trend, and the green transformation of the industry is imperative. This prompts the use of environmentally-friendly chemicals in process design, and bio-based textile chemicals precisely meet the current demands, thus becoming a focus of attention.
Bio-based textile chemicals mainly include four categories: bio-based coloring agents, bio-based surfactants, bio-based finishing agents, and textile printing and dyeing enzymes.
Bio-based Coloring Agent
Bio-based coloring agents mainly include various kinds of natural dyes and pigments, such as plant-based natural dyes: gardenia yellow, turmeric and tomato red, etc., animal-derived pigments: cochineal red and scallop purple, etc., and various microbial pigments: red yeast rice pigment. At present, beta-carotene (such as Trichospora trichospora) and astaxanthin (such as Haematococcus pluvialis) have also been produced on a large scale.
Bio-based Surfactant
Bio-based surfactants have diversified structure and properties, as well as good environmental compatibility. Common bio-based surfactants include glycolipids, natural glycosides, synthetic alkyl glycosides, protein-based surfactants and amino acid-based surfactants, etc. However, in practical application in the industry, there are still bottlenecks such as high prices and difficulties in large-scale production.
Bio-based Finishing Agent
Bio-based finishing agents have diversified types and functions, including bio-based fluorine-free water-repellent finishing agent, chitosan antibacterial finishing agent and phytic acid flame retardant, etc.
Textile Printing and Dyeing Enzymes
Enzymes themselves are easily biodegraded and do not require the addition of a large amount of chemicals, which can significantly reduce the burden of sewage treatment. Therefore, textile printing and dyeing enzymes are also a type of environmentally-friendly bio-based auxiliaries.
